The history of the Kriūkai School

Historical sources say that village’s school named Svetošinė, that had two classes, was established in the manor house with the same name, in 1913.  Vasa Jakimova was the first teacher who worked there. She taught in the Russian language, books and other training aids were also in the Russian language.  That school existed till the First World War. When the war started education was over.

After the war, in 1918, in the same manor house Lithuanian primary school was opened. Children learned in the Lithuanian language. Urbaitis was the first teacher in this school and he worked for seven years. Later there worked J. Buksnys and Antanas Krutulis.

In 1932, the school, which consisted of two sets, was opened in Kriūkai. Juozas Cimbolaitis (teacher–exile), Narciza and Feliksas Pranaiciai (in 1941 they were exiled to the Siberia), Terese Vedegiene and Stasys Dabusis worked there as teachers. In 1938 school was desolated and after that it was renovated (windows were changed, number of classes were increased, and hall was tooled up).

In autumn 1944, school, with four elementary and four basic classes, was established. Later, school put on one class every year. One more building (former house of policeman Sedaitis) was allocated to the school.

In 1948, school already got full eight classes and was called gymnasium. Children of four primary classes learned in former house of Sedaitis, and children of fifth-eight classes learned on the hill (current school building). In 1949 school was named secondary.

Juozas Naujokaitis was the first principal of the school. He came to Kriūkai in 1944, established progymnasiun and worked as a principal. He was awarded with medal for his work. In 1949 he was ousted from office because he “was below standards of Soviet school”. Albinas Jonikaitis, Vladas Bružas, Jonas Gudaitis, Bronius Jazdauskas, Antanas Rutkauskas and Mamertas Pazikas were later principals of the school. Children who attended school were from Žemoji Panemunė, Ilguva and Kriūkai. In 1954 hostel (for the convenience of pupil) was opened not far from the school.

The reconstruction plan of the school was prepared because of the principal A. Rutkauskas, who worked till 1961. According to that plan the construction of the school began. In 1962 pupils tooled up workshop and set up stadium.

In 1961 – 1963 permission, to build eight classes wing, was received.

Vanda Pazikienė was the principal of the school for twenty-four years (1963 – 1987). During those years the school expanded: in 1964, workshop was built in former manor house; in 1965, eight classes wing was started to use; in 1974, the second two floors addition, with sporting hall, canteen, boiler, library, cloakroom and premises for eight classes, was built; in 1976 – 1977, the school started to work in classroom system; classroom of vocational guidance, physics and chemistry, and shooting-gallery.

The school was further beautified with efforts of Principal Marija Rubikienė who worked in 1987 – 1995. The lesser hall and principal’s office were set up, Regenerative Park was landscaped.

Alvydas Grinkevičius (the pupil of the 32nd (laidos)) was the principal of the school in 1995 – 2002.

Since 2002, Lilija Dailidaite-Liutvinienė (the pupil of the 35th (laidos)) is the principal of the school.

In 2003, a museum was opened in the school.

In 2004 – 2007, the school is attending international project “Ecological brothers” in accordance with Socrates Comenius 1.1 program.
